The Kawasaki Z400 (another designation: KZ400) is a Japanese sports touring motorcycle that was first presented to the public in 1974. At the same time, its serial production began, which lasted until 1984. Mass production took place in the cities of Akashi in Japan and Lincoln in the United States.

The Z400 model was created and put into production in order to get the largest possible part of the sports-touring motorbike segment, especially in the domestic and North American markets. From the beginning, it was assumed that the Kawasaki Z400 would be the smallest possible motorcycle, relatively cheap to use and buy. The drive was originally a 2-cylinder 398 cm3 engine. In 1980, however, the KZ400-J model with a 4-cylinder engine was put into production. This engine was also used by the Z400 GP model. From 1983, the Z400 model began to be replaced in the company’s offer by Kawasaki ZR400.
