First introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show as the HSX concept car, the GTO went on sale to the general public in October of the next year. Bursting with power and the latest technological wonders, its combination of performance and considerable safety vaulted the car impressively onto the 4WD sports car scene. The top grade model had a 280hp 3-liter V6 DOHC twin turbo front engine and a full-time 4WD setup with center diff, plus electronically-regulated four-wheel suspension, ABS, 4-wheel steering, adjustable front and rear spoilers, an active exhaust system that let you tinker with the exhaust sound: the list of hi-tech design features was almost endless. The GTO would also lay the foundation for Mitsubishi’s high performance 4WD sports cars of the future.
